2019 Awards

Each year, VTA recognizes outstanding leadership and contributions by individuals who are working to advance public transportation in their community. VTA also recognizes innovative, effective programs by our public transportation providers, business partners, and governmental leaders.

The Virginia Transit Association presented the following awards at its 2019 Awards Luncheon in Portsmouth to recognize outstanding service by individuals and exceptional transit programs and to advance and expand public transportation in the Commonwealth.

Awards Presentation

Helen Poore Transit Professional Distinguished Service Award
The Helen Poore Transit Professional Distinguished Service Award is given to transit professionals who have made outstanding contributions to advance transit in their region and who have been actively involved in VTA.

Reggie Smith
As Harrisonburg’s Director of Public Transportation, Reggie Smith is retiring after more than four decades of public service. Reggie grew HDPT from 8 used taxis to a fleet of 39 transport buses, 63 school buses, and 12 paratransit buses with 200 employees.

The Distinguished Legislative Leadership Award

Senator Monty Mason

Delegate Bob Thomas

These Distinguished Legislative Leaders sponsored  SB 1680 and HB 2553 and an accompanying budget amendment – these were overwhelmingly successful bills that provide transition assistance for transit providers in 2020. This will assist those systems that will incur a loss in operating funds as a direct result of the new performance-based allocation process. They have promoted public transportation as a major component for growing and diversifying Virginia’s economy and alleviating congestion.
